Lesson 6: German Subject (Subjekt)

Subject (Subjekt) – A1 Grammar

The subject (Subjekt) is the part of the sentence that we are talking about, or that a certain characteristic is attributed to. In basic German sentences, the subject usually comes before the verb and often appears at the beginning of the sentence.

Examples:

  • Ich heiße Peter. — My name is Peter.
  • Peter lernt Deutsch. — Peter is learning German.
  • Sie ist Studentin. — She is a student.

As you can see, the subject (e.g. ich, Peter, sie) usually comes at the beginning of the sentence and agrees with the verb.
